Botswana: Fotograferen op de grens van modder en wildernis
Onze reis door Botswana begon met een sprint op het vliegveld van Johannesburg, maar zodra we in Maun uit het vliegtuig stapten, vertraagde de tijd. Wat volgde was een intensieve fotografiereis door de Okavango Delta, Savuti en Chobe—een expeditie die werd getekend door spectaculaire ontmoetingen, uitdagende tracks en het unieke licht van het regenseizoen.
Dit jaar waren we met een groep fotografen onder begeleiding van Henk Vanetie (fotografie). De groep bestond uit Robert, Esther, Karin en ik.
Het ritme van de Delta
Onze tocht begon in de regio rond Khwai. Botswana in dit seizoen betekent groen, water en onvoorspelbaarheid. Een van de absolute hoogtepunten was de tocht in een mokoro (traditionele kano). Terwijl we geruisloos door de waterwegen van de Delta gleden, stak een kudde olifanten vlak voor ons de rivier over. Vanaf het lage wateroppervlak kregen deze giganten een indrukwekkende dimensie die je vanaf een safari-voertuig simpelweg mist.
De “Dakar” van de Bush
De overvloedige regen van de afgelopen tijd maakte het navigeren door de bush tot een sport op zich. Onze gids Julius loodste ons door diepe modder en overgelopen tracks. Op een middag escaleerde dit in wat we gekscherend de ‘Dakar-race’ noemden: terwijl we een groep jagende leeuwen volgden, kwamen we muurvast te zitten in de zuigende modder. Met leeuwen op dertig meter afstand moesten we de wagen uit om met boomstammen, vijzels en brute mankracht de jeep weer vlot te trekken. Het is op zulke momenten dat je de rauwe werkelijkheid van de bush echt ervaart.
Savuti: Het domein van de grote katten
In Savuti verschoof het decor naar de iconische Baobab-bomen en drogere zandvlaktes. Hier lag de focus op de jacht naar de meest ongrijpbare bewoner: het luipaard. Dankzij het vakmanschap van onze gids en het luisteren naar de roep van de dieren, stonden we oog in oog met een luipaard in het dichte struikgewas. Het vastleggen van deze dieren vereist geduld en snelle reflexen, zeker wanneer het licht door het bladerdek speelt.
De nachten in onze tentenkampen waren een belevenis op zich. Het brullen van leeuwen rondom het kamp en de aanwezigheid van een ontspannen olifant bij de kampkeuken herinnerden ons eraan dat we hier te gast waren in hún territorium.
Chobe: Water en licht
De reis culmineerde in het Chobe National Park. De Chobe-rivier stond vier meter hoger dan normaal, wat zorgde voor een weids en waterrijk landschap. Dit bleek een paradijs voor vogelfotografie. Met de Sony-gear konden we de visarenden en verschillende ijsvogels (zoals de Woodland en Pied Kingfisher) haarscherp vastleggen.
Afsluiting
Na dagen van stof, modder, banden wisselen in onweersbuien en het back-uppen van duizenden beelden aan de keukentafel, eindigde de reis in Kasane. Botswana liet ons wederom zien dat het een van de meest authentieke wildlife-bestemmingen ter wereld is. De camera’s hebben overuren gedraaid, de batterijen zijn leeg, maar de portfolio is een flink aantal unieke platen rijker.
